The Port was a breath of fresh air – a nautically-themed unique ship, HMS Bestival sailed into our lives and has rocked our Bestival experience for the past three years.
But last Wednesday, it was announced that HMS Bestival had vanished in mysterious circumstances and despite imminent investigations, the ship’s fate remains unclear amidst a whole host of conspiracy theories.
However, The Port – “devoid of its antiqued maritime attraction” will evolve into “a colossal cosmodrome” – The Spaceport.
Taking the place of the legendary boat, The Spaceport will host an out-of-this-world line-up of DJs including Diplo, Fatboy Slim and Carl Cox.
The festival’s curator, Rob da Bank, said: “Be under no illusions my futuristic friends, this stage is going to blow your mind and take you interstellar like no other stage before.
“This is The Future of the dance. HMS Bestival, our trusty old ship, has sunk or otherwise been sucked down a Bermuda Triangle shaped whirlpool, and thus we are reinventing Robin Hill’s sacred rave space once more with a spaceship the likes Planet Earth has never witnessed.”
“The Spaceport is a unique step in the advancement of sound and vision, where next-level partying isn’t just an ambition, it’s a promise.”
The brand new stage features a vast rocket standing 20 metres tall with an astonishing seven storeys and its structure is loaded with lasers and a state of the art db audio array processing sound system.
The rocket will beam out music day and night, with lighting design from Lite Alt Design’s renowned Paul Normandale – whose previous credits include Coldplay and The Chemical Brothers.
As well as sharing the main stage spotlight with Major Lazer, Diplo will be making a separate appearance headlining the new stage. He first appeared at Bestival in 2009 when he brought his Mad Decent Soundsystem to the Isle of Wight.
Pioneer of rave and three-deck wizard Carl Cox is also lined up for special excursions at The Spaceport, as well as Bestival veteran Fatboy Slim – who has played on just about every stage throughout the years.
Bestival is the traditional curtain-closer of the UK festival season, situated at the picturesque Robin Hill Country Park.
The full line-up for The Spaceport is to be announced soon, along with the last main stage headliner.
“See you at The Spaceport in t-minus 196 days and counting…”
Major Lazer, The Cure, Hot Chip, Bastille and Years & Years have all been announced for this year’s spectacle, with plenty more to come.
